You Can't Let an Elephant Drive a Racing Car; Patricia Cleveland-Peck, illustrated by David Tazzyman29/9/2022
Readers of this brilliant, laugh-out-loud, side-splitting series will be all too familiar with many of the problems of an elephant. For those who don’t know…elephants cannot be taken on buses, should never be called in an emergency, cannot drive diggers and should never be taken on holiday. But can an elephant drive a racing car?
Elephant has a dream…to become a Grand Prix driving sensation. But elephants and racing cars don’t quite go together and before he gets to the start his super-fast car is in bits. He’s not the only one that wants to try his animal prowess in the world of human sports. How will wombat, stork monkey and puma fare as they try diving, gymnastics, weightlifting and running…
Animals bring their own brand of mischief and chaos to popular sports in a rib-tickling, laugh till your belly hurts picture book that is perfect for reading aloud. Packed full of clever rhymes and hilarious pictures, this is riotous sporting fun as a host of loveable animals find themselves partaking in all sorts of sports that are usually played by their human counterparts. Of course we have the elephant trying to drive a racing car which ends in obvious disaster. But he is not the only one with sporting troubles as a cricket-playing kangaroo, a pole-vaulting hippo, a table-tennis playing octopus, a footballing warthog and a figure-skating alligator are just some of the others who prove their talents perhaps lie in other domains.
Whilst none of the protagonists are going to be winning any medals for their sporting endeavours, the animals show that having fun, giving things that may not come naturally to you a go and trying your best are what really matters. And what better way to relax and soothe aching muscles than a bubble bath with all your mates.
Ridiculous animal antics and heartwarming messages will have this book sitting on top of the winners podium and I guarantee that young children will be wanting it read again and again! With huge thanks to Bloomsbury for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review. Recommended for 2+.
