Woof, woof! Willa and her furry BFF, albino Irish wolfhound Woof, are back for another fun-filled adventure together and this time they are facing their biggest challenge yet.
Summer has arrived in Hibiscus Gardens and everyone in Willa’s family is excited for Aunty Jane’s wedding. Woof has the special job of ring bearer and Willa has a fancy new dress to wear that looks a bit like a meringue. With summer comes bushfires and when a fire burns the wedding venue to the ground it looks like the big day is off and wedding bells won’t be sounding anytime soon. Willa is determined that Aunty Jane will get married as planned but will she and Woof be able to save the day…
Written by award-winning author Jacqueline Harvey, this delightfully illustrated series of early chapter books are a tail-wagging success. This fourth ‘tail’ is another paw-some read that will delight young dog and animal lovers, especially those that share the same special bond with their pet as Willa and Woof.
There is nothing that smart, resourceful, pro-active and problem-solving Willa, along with her best friend fur-ever Woof and her human friend Tae, will not attempt to solve. Even after a ruff day of bushfires, Willa’s optimistic attitude and keenness to help others has not been dampened and her determination to make the best of any situation is as strong as ever. With a head full of ideas and endless amounts of energy she is always full of paws-itivity and her infectious demeanour soon has the whole community coming together to help others in their time of need.
Family, friendship, supporting one another and the power of community spirit are at the heart of these sparky tales. Surprises, help from unexpected sources and plenty of humour, heart and kindness will leave readers barking for more. Willa’s neighbours, especially the residents at the retirement village next to her home, are a delightful bunch. Whether offering to bake a cake, stitching dresses or helping Willa carry out her ideas, the youngster and the elderly are always there for each other and it is fabulous to see friendships blossoming; age is no barrier to healthy and meaningful companionship. The youngsters bring much joy to the lives of the retirees, and the wise words of the elderly, along with their often hidden talents and an endless supply of delicious cakes, biscuits and cups of tea are central to the success of Willa’s plans.
Those gaining in confidence and beginning to read independently will adore these charming tales. Black and white illustrations sprinkled throughout, chapters that end on cliff hangers, oversized text and smile-inducing chapter headings all add to a read that gets four paws up from me. You’ll be one sick puppy if you miss out on this series, so paw-lease do yourself a favour and grab a copy of Willa and Woof. The duo will be back to hopefully save the day again with the next book due out in July. Recommended for 6+. With huge thanks to Penguin Random House for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
