Arthur didn’t really like Christmas; it was too loud, too bright, too busy. And when he loses Barney, a comforting cuddly polar bear, this Christmas will be the worst one yet. Spirits are lifted with the most surprising of deliveries from Father Christmas…a REAL polar bear. Arthur names his new friend Bjorn, yet despite his best efforts to keep the bear cool and happy it is clear that Bjorn doesn’t belong here. With a promise to Father Christmas to keep, can Barney get Bjorn back to where he truly belongs… Touching, heartfelt and with an iceberg of emotion, Where Bjorn Belongs is an utterly adorable story with the most beautiful of bonds between boy and polar bear at its heart. Tenderly written and with gorgeous illustrations that capture the magic of Christmas and the wonders of the natural world, Arthur and Bjorn will capture hearts as friendship blossoms and dreams are followed, culminating in the most magical of endings.
The addressing of real issues adds a further later to this wintry read. Arthur’s experience of Christmas is a much needed representation of the challenges that the festive season can bring to those who are neurodiverse. Children need to see themselves in books and anyone who has autism will be comforted by Arthur’s experiences and realities. Bjorn’s story highlights climate change and the melting of the polar ice caps. Animals need our help and whilst Christmas miracles won’t slow down the melting of the polar ice caps everyone will want to do more after meeting this delightful pair. Sad and tear-jerking at times, heartwarming and wholesome at others, this is a perfect addition to the winter reading box. Recommended for 3+.
