What’s That, Jack?; Cédric Ramadier, illustrated by Vincent Bourgeau, translated by Antony Shugaar9/5/2023
One object, endless possibilities in this tale of discovery, adventure and the joys of the unknown.
Jack and George are not up to much when George spots something unusual in the sky hurtling towards Earth. But what could it be? ‘What’s that?' asks Jack. Neither is sure what the strange thing is and soon it is leading the pair on an epic, shape-shifting adventure and becoming exactly what the friends need as they encounter land, sky and sea. But what actually is the object…
You’ll find fun, imagination and adventure with Jack and George, two friends whose imagination knows no bounds. Fascinated by the strange blue sphere, they soon discover that looks can be deceiving and that the object that might be a boulder or a ball has many uses. Thrust into unexpected adventure, it rolls them across the land, parachutes them safely down, softens their fall into water and keeps them warm at night.
Vibrant artwork in pinks and blues will capture the eyes and the repetitive refrains of ‘What is it, Jack?’ and ‘I don’t know, George’ will quickly fill little ears and have a gleeful audience merrily participating along. Preschoolers are sure to enjoy the fun that these two friends have and will enjoy guessing what form the object might take next. It sets the tone perfectly for a day of imaginative play and creative thinking as children can be challenged to turn the simplest of objects into many different things. Thick pages encourage little hands to help turn the pages and ensure a durable book that can be enjoyed time and time again.
Recommended for 2+. With huge thanks to Walker and Gecko Press for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
