Summer holiday camp meets murder mystery in Cynthia Murphy’s gripping Barrington Stoke debut. Chad and his team of instructors are buzzing with excitement at their American-style summer camp in the grounds of an English stately home. Tomorrow will bring new arrivals and signal the start of a month of fun and activities. The campers have hardly had time to settle in before things take a turn for the worse. A near-drowning out on the lake, a fatal cliff fall, death by arrow. Something is very, very wrong at Camp Miller. Are the counsellors victims of a terrible tragedy from the past or is there a more sinister explanation… Forget days of kayaking and high ropes and evenings spent singing songs around the camp fire and toasting marshmallows under the stars. This is the summer camp of nightmares and whilst not a great advert for enticing the next batch of Camp America counsellors, Welcome to Camp Killer is a cracking pulse-pounding, heart-racing young adult horror that is all thriller, no filler.
Cynthia Murphy is an expert when it comes to thrilling horrors and like most of the killings at Camp Miller, the fast-paced narrative is perfectly executed. A spine-tingling atmosphere coupled with relentless action, rising tension and an even faster rising body count gives little chance to catch the breath as those that are alive try to work out exactly what is going on and more importantly, survive the night. An intriguing blend of paranormal and slasher scenario ensures suspicion, finger-pointing and guessing games right until the last page. Expect twists, turns, the unexpected and an ending that packs a hefty punch. Published in Barrington Stoke’s accessible style with dyslexia-friendly font and page tint, this is the perfect introduction to horror and slasher reads. If you’re after frights, creative slayings and a chilling whodunnit then a vacation at Camp Killer comes highly recommended. Recommended for 13+. With huge thanks to Barrington Stoke for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
