I, like many children, love diving into an information book and learning about a specific period of history.
Ever wondered what life was like as an Ancient Egyptian? Thousands of years ago, Ancient Egypt was a thriving civilisation where everyone worked hard and was trying to live their best life. Skilled workers built incredible structures, doctors, who spoke to Goddesses, treated the sick, brewers made beer because it was safer to drink than water, embalmers mummified dead bodies for the journey to the Field of Reeds, merchants traded goods and Pharaohs ruled. Together, they were the Ancient Egyptians…
Just like an Ancient Egyptian burial tomb, David Long and Allen Fatimaharan’s latest book is a treasure trove of delights. A flavour of life in Ancient Egypt awaits in this fact-filled guide to those that lived, worked and ruled in the land of Pharaohs, pyramids and one of the longest rivers in the world.
A general introduction kicks things off before nineteen people from all walks of life share their stories and experiences. Told in first-person, we get to hear from a powerful Pharaoh, a fisherman and a farmer, a royal sculptor, a tomb robber and a jewellery maker, amongst others. It is fascinating to learn about the different lives and with the first-person approach it genuinely feels like you have been transported back in time and are listening to someone tell you about their life. Fatimaharan’s artwork, that features locations, tools and clothing, etc, are specific to each individual and really bring Ancient Egypt to life!
An abundance of additional content includes a map of Ancient Egypt, a timeline of significant moments beginning with the settling of the first people along the Nile and concluding with the conquering of Egypt by the Roman Empire, snippets on some of the many Gods and Goddesses, an explanation of pyramid construction, a guide to hieroglyphics, instructions for making papyrus paper and a sweet Egyptian treat, and a detailed glossary. A superb non-fiction book and a must read for any child with an interest in Ancient Egypt. With huge thanks to Allen & Unwin and Welbeck Publishing for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review. Recommended for 7+.
