Walk With Us is the fourth book in the ‘Welcome to Our Country’ collection, a series of titles produced by Adam Goodes, Ellie Laing and David Hardy. It is another relevant and important read that will help support families with young children in bringing Australia’s past into the present. Harvey and Mum are going to their favourite park but today isn’t like most days. Today they are going to take a walk on Cammeraygal land with a very special guide to show them the way. Uncle Boris knows a lot about the land, the ancestors and Country, and by the end of the walk Harvey and Mum will see the park, the flora and the fauna in a whole new way… Inspired by the ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’, readers are invited to take a walk with Uncle Boris and discover more about the First Nations country as he awakens the ancestors and acknowledges Country. And what a delightful walk it is, under a clear blue sky and with the sun shining down we are encouraged to smell nature’s treasures, to seek out water, to listen for the sounds of wildlife and to spot the gifts that Mother Earth presents to us. As Uncle Boris shares his wisdom, we are encouraged to learn, to recognise, to appreciate and to honour the rich culture and history of a country, its lands and the Indigenous ancestors. Like Harvey and his mum, the walk helps readers to see the world through a new lens and, in doing so, recognise how the land and the natural resources have supported those that have walked upon it for thousands of years.
The trio behind this have created something truly excellent and by combining narrative with history's truths readers have access to something that is educational, engaging and enjoyable. The eye-catching cover will attract and the vibrant illustrations and warm voice are perfect for a young audience. Do not skip over the endpapers either, they feature a lovely illustrated glossary of Cammeraygal language. It is important that future generations are taught about the land on which they walk and that the First Nations people continue to be honoured and their stories shared. For these things to happen books like this are essential as they provide parents and educators with the tools to share important lessons and history. Recommended for 4+. With huge thanks to Allen & Unwin for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
