Something very important is happening tomorrow, little brother is going to school for the very first time. Luckily, big brother knows all about school life and has made a list of everything important. Lots of new and exciting things await, from friends and fun to learning and lunches, teachers and toilets to sand pits and sports days. Most days will be great but it’s ok if there’s an occasional gloomy one. And if little brother ever needs a helping hand along the way then his big brother will always be there for him… The first day of school is a big deal and not just for those entering the classroom. To help children and families navigate a momentous day, Kitty and Cate have created this most delightful of picture books that is full of excellent advice and a heart-warming sibling bond. Starring an inclusive and diverse class of children, The Starting School List is gentle, comforting and reassuring, and is an excellent resource for supporting and empowering any new preppies as they set out on one of life’s biggest and best adventures. Delivered in bouncy rhyming text and with illustrations of relatable situations, children are taken on a first day of school journey that explores many of the experiences that they will have. Difficult goodbyes are said on the playground before the smell of a new school year is found in the classroom. Friends are made on the playground, fun is to be found in learning and the most important of places (the loos) is located. I love the reminder that not all days will be full of happy vibes and the need to show empathy, understanding and kindness towards others. All of these unfurl in a banner running throughout the story as the pages of big brother’s list are revealed and pieced together.
If you have a little one heading off to school for the first time, be sure to have this amongst your back to school goodies. With huge thanks to Affirm Press for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review. Recommended for 5+.
