The Night the Reindeer Saved Christmas; Raj Kaur Khaira, illustrated by Kasia Nowowiejska22/12/2023 Santa has been very busy at the North Pole but finally everything is ready. Well almost. Some misplaced tinsel has caused the rockets on the sleigh to explode. With no means to power the sleigh, Christmas is going to be cancelled. Children around the world are going to be disappointed until Mrs Claus has an idea. Will her plan work? Will Santa find a Christmas miracle? Do reindeers really know how to fly… The Night the Reindeer Saved Christmas is a wonderfully diverse and inclusive read that steps away from the typical portrayal of Mr and Mrs Claus. Christmas is for everyone and it is lovely that children who perhaps don’t always feel represented in festive picture books can feel seen here. A great storyline, with a surprising revelation, features charming illustrations and plenty of Arctic animals of which there are facts about at the end. With mild peril, an icy talent show, a magical discovery and a heartwarming message of coming together in the face of adversity, children are sure to enjoy this fast-moving, festive read. There’s even a brilliant and little-known fact about Santa’s reindeer crew to wow family and friends with over the holidays. Did you know that all of the reindeer, Dasher through Blitzen, are females? Yep, the big man might be driving the sleigh but it isn’t going anywhere without plenty of #girlpower. Continuing the females saving the day theme is the delightful Mrs Claus without whose idea Santa’s sleigh would still be stuck on the ground. Cute and Christmassy! Read it on Christmas Eve and send little ones off to sleep with dreams of reindeer antler magic swimming through their heads.
