I’ve always wondered why Santa Claus has such a long, snowy white beard…now I know. ’Twas the night before the night before Christmas and at the North Pole there’s plenty of work still to be done. The elves are rushed off their feet making presents, reindeers need to be readied, a sleigh needs to be polished and Santa has a very long to do list. Excitement was building and Christmas was calling, but what had Santa forgotten to do… A brilliantly funny twist on the original ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, this playful reworking of a beloved classic will have the whole family in raptures as the events and stresses of the night before the night before Christmas are revealed with a very unexpected ending. Now I’m no stranger to last minute Christmas preparations; dashing to the shops on Christmas Eve just before doors close to pick up a gift for someone I’ve forgotten about, racing around the supermarket to get supplies for the celebrations, baking mince pies and gingerbread late into the night, I may have even wrapped up a present on Christmas morning. But you’d expect the man who works for only one night of the year to be fully prepared, it’s not like he can say that he hasn’t had the time to get sorted. However, Santa is far from organised in this seasonal caper and there’s a stocking full of festive frolicking with a right old merry-mad-dash to get everything ready on time including ten billion presents and eight very sleepy reindeer. Like turkey and cranberry sauce, Christmas pudding and brandy butter, and partridges and pear trees, Kes and Claire are the perfect combination. Kes doesn’t miss a beat with witty and humorous bouncy rhymes that are just begging to be read aloud. Claire’s gorgeous illustrations, that bring Christmas Eve Eve to life, are bursting with things to spot and there is a lovely mix of the modern with delightful touches of nostalgia. I loved the sneaky clue hinting at what Santa needs to do, you might need to go back and look for this.
Overflowing with warmth and charm, The Night Before the Night Before Christmas is a must read on the twenty-third of December that will have everyone ha-ha-ha-ing and ho-ho-ho-ing their way into the celebrations. Recommended for 3+.
