Clara Vulliamy writes brilliant, accessible and highly illustrated chapter books for children. She has given us detective Dotty, cat superstar Marshmallow Pie, and now we are introduced to a trio of mystery-loving, investigative children collectively known as The Newshounds. Eva and her friends, Ash and Simone, love reporting on all the latest goings-on. They broke the news when Orla saw a ghost in the playground and when Vijay won a dance competition. The latest story is set to be their biggest yet. Eva has discovered a stray dog and they need to find the owner. As the leads dry up it looks like Wafer might be one mystery the gang don’t solve. But perhaps that’s not such a bad thing after all because then Wafer might be around fur-ever… Featuring a diverse cast of characters, including non-binary representation, and exploring themes of friendship, doing the right thing, acting responsibly and animal welfare, the first read in a fantastic new series is a tail-wagging success and will delight mystery-loving children and lovers of dogs. Thoroughly entertaining - readers will laugh along at many of Wafer’s antics - and filled with charming illustrations throughout, children will love hanging out with the Newshounds and will be barking loudly for more. Fun, full of heart and with plenty for children to think about, this woofing great read gets four paws up from me!
Recommended for 7+. With huge thanks to Harper Collins for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
