You won’t find tinsel, baubles, fairy lights or wrapped presents here, you’ll find something much more special at the Christmas Eve tree. The ugly little fir tree hadn’t grown tall and perfect like the others. So as it stood alone in the shop on Christmas Eve it was not surprised that it hadn’t been taken home. But then a little boy comes along and for him the little fir tree is just perfect. Finally feeling loved, the little fir tree is a picture of light and happiness, and, for the first time in its life, is the centre of attention. But what will happen when Christmas is over and the little fir tree is no longer needed… A homeless boy’s rescue of a weedy looking tree has long-lasting consequences in a touching, poignant and thought-provoking tale of community, belonging and new beginnings. Unlike many picture books at this time of year, this isn’t about merry mishaps, seasonal shenanigans or festive frolicking. Yet out on the streets there is no sign of winter chill, the Christmas magic is everywhere and this timeless and life-affirming tale will warm hearts and leave readers appreciating what really matters at Christmas. Charmingly told, Delia’s words capture the true essence of Christmas whilst gently emphasising the need for kindness, understanding and empathy to those that are less fortunate. Rich or poor, with home or without, young or old, Christmas is for all. Full of delightful little details to spot, Emily’s illustrations are spectacular, warmly inviting the reader to join in a Christmas celebration that is far from ideal. The scenes at the department store, the community coming together around the tree and the snow-filled cityscape are especially special. Not everyone will have the picture-perfect Christmas, many, including children, will be out on the streets, surviving as best they can with wishes of staying warm and a decent meal. Never lost in the gloom of the situation, The Christmas Eve Tree finds hope and happiness where there could, and perhaps, should, be despair. Christmas is the hopeful season, and as the little tree radiantly shines in the light of candles, and as the sound of carols fill the air, the Christmas spirit is all around. A wonderful book to share on December twenty-fourth with a valuable lesson that there is more to Christmas than gifts.
