As a general rule, I tend to avoid books with a celebrity name attributed to them - such titles get plenty of media coverage as it is. However, I make an exception for Marcus Rashford who has worked relentlessly to improve the quality of life and futures for young people. The partnership between the football star and the National Literacy Trust is a wonderful initiative that aims to get books into the hands of those that need them most with the hope of fostering a love of reading. The Breakfast Club Adventures have been thoughtfully designed for children like Marcus, where reading and access to books wasn’t a given; oversized text, a clever use of different fonts and tons of artwork enhance the reading experience and ensure kids will hopefully find the joy in reading for pleasure.
The Breakfast Club Investigators have had a hard time of late. Asim, Stacey, Lise and Marcus haven’t solved a single mystery since they uncovered what was taking the things that were chucked over the school fence. And they’re not the only ones on an unlucky streak. Rutherford School’s basketball team cannot get a win no matter what they do and with a big tournament looming they desperately need a change of luck. A mysterious figure, spotted in the gym, has sparked rumours that the team might be cursed.
When team captain and star player Gbenga asks for help, the BCI have the perfect opportunity to prove themselves as the school’s top mystery-solvers. But with strange goings-on mounting up and lots of clues but no answers, the investigators are in danger of another failure. Can they crack the case and get the basketball team back to winning ways… A ghoul in the school, a basketball team suffering a confidence crisis, a mystery-solving society that are not solving any mysteries, strange happenings, arch-rivals that could spell the end for the BCI…Marcus Rashford and Alex Falase-Koya have created another enjoyable school-based adventure-mystery that addresses lots of the worries that children have and promotes friendship, teamwork and the importance of asking for help. This is a great sequel that is filled with suspense, peril and a few frights as the gang are hot on the trail of a possible supernatural being. Easy to read and with plenty of illustrations, readers will race through another fast-paced and exciting mystery that twists and turns its way through the school corridors and classrooms as the BCI try to prove that they still have what it takes to solve the school’s toughest cases. Sporty kids, especially football/soccer players (depending on where you are in the world), and lovers of mystery reads will really enjoy this. A little bit spooky, lots of fun and highly enjoyable, the Breakfast Club Investigators are an organisation that every child will be wanting to join. Recommended for 8+. With huge thanks to Pan Macmillan for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
