Are you ready to press start? To bounce, hop, swim and dash your way through lava, sand, water and tunnel-filled levels? To do battle with King Viking’s army of Robot creatures? And to smash King Viking’s Mega Robo-Viking Armour to smithereens? The happiness of Animal Town is at stake!
Sunny loves playing his favourite video game, Super Rabbit Boy, and likes nothing more than battling King Viking and keeping Animal Town peaceful and happy. In his latest no-fun plan, the Viking has stolen Singing Dog! A hero is needed to teach the rascal a lesson once and for all. Powered by carrots and full of determination, can Super Rabbit Boy save the day? The Game. Is. On. But will it be game over or level completed for Sunny and Super Rabbit Boy…
This new series of full colour reads by Thomas Flintham is a joyous and fun-filled introduction to the awesome world of graphic novels. A pacy story combined with simple sentences offer a reading experience that children will want to play again and again. Imitating a real gaming experience, the action-packed adventures see Super Rabbit Boy venture through different levels, facing various challenges and having to think on his feet to defeat the various enemies that he comes across. Lives are lost along the way and readers will easily relate to the frustration of being sent back to the start if a level is failed and the need to persevere and begin again.
I am a massive fan of the 8-bit style illustrations that took me back to my younger gaming days, I’m talking the 1980’s and the wonderful world of ZX Spectrum 48K and Atari 64. Whilst younger readers won’t be familiar with such pioneering gaming machines, they will find the artwork to be very much in keeping with Minecraft. Other nostalgic moments are delivered through the Game Boy style console that our gamer Sunny plays on and the final battle that has all of the vibes of defeating one of the baddies from Super Mario.
Hugely appealing to kids, especially young gamers, and will have adults yearning for those gaming experiences of yesteryear and had me saying, 'they certainly don’t make them like that any more.’ The first two titles in the series, Press Start! Game On, Super Rabbit Boy and Press Start! Super Rabbit Boy Powers Up, publish simultaneously with further titles scheduled for release later in the year. It’s time to power up, get your game on and press start. With huge thanks to Allen & Unwin and Nosy Crow for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review. Recommended for 5+.
