We’ve all been there, ordered what we thought would be the perfect item only for things to not quite work out as planned. Many of us would perhaps keep the item anyway and make the best of the situation but Polar Bear knows an unhappy penguin when he sees one and is determined to do something about it.
Who wouldn’t want a penguin as a pet? And the snowy plains of the Arctic would make the perfect home for one, wouldn’t they? After spotting an advert for a pet penguin in the newspaper, Polar Bear is quick to place an order. To start with, Penguin is the perfect pet but as time goes on Penguin is not enjoying life quite as much as Polar Bear was hoping. Penguin is sad and Polar Bear knows exactly what he needs to do to fix things…
In her second gorgeous picture book, Victoria Cassanell delivers a funny and warm-hearted tale of an unexpected friendship from the polar regions. Unlike Polar Bear who ultimately has to return Penguin to where he truly belongs, there is no chance that anyone will want to return this sparkling Arctic adventure.
When Penguin arrives at Polar Bear’s igloo - adults will smile knowingly as Polar Bear patiently waits all day inside his igloo for the parcel to be delivered only for it to be left outside the door - Polar Bear is thrilled, Penguin is perhaps a little confused but goes along with the situation. Far from home - hilariously indicated by the delivery box arctic.com - Penguin soon needs more than Polar Bear can offer and the idea of a mail order penguin is not the waddle in the ice that Polar Bear was dreaming of.
Plenty of tender and warm-hearted moments are shared as Polar Bear bonds with, cares for and plays with his new pet but it is Polar Bear’s moment of realisation and the need to do what is right for Penguin that is the highlight. Despite Polar Bear’s efforts to make his new friend feel welcome it is the empathy, understanding and kindness that he shows towards Penguin that will leave hearts melting. Polar Bear, who loves to give cuddles, to knit and to go sledging, is thoughtful and caring and his actions are the kind of ones that we want children to embrace; to think of others, to put the needs of others before your own and to do the right thing even if it is not what you really want to do. Featuring absolutely adorable illustrations, young children will love joining Penguin and Polar Bear in this feel-good read. Perfect for snuggling up with on a cold winter’s night. With huge thanks to Pan Macmillan for this delightful story. Recommended for 2+.
