Penelope Snoop is the best Finder-Outer-in-the-Whole-Wide-World and with her trusty dog Carlos by her side there is not a case that cannot be cracked. Now they have their most serious and important investigation to solve…Sidney the Smelly Sock Snake has vanished, quite possibly stolen. But who would have stolen him and where would they have taken him? Will Penelope and Carlos be able to follow the clues and sniff Sidney out or has he gone forever…
A real-life mystery and the rich imagination of a child make for a hilarious search for a sock that goes all the way from home to the garden and even up to the moon. In Penelope’s wonderful world, vacuum cleaners become super transporters, grass becomes dangerous shark-filled seas and footprints of mud monsters need to be followed. This is playful and serious detective-work at its very best.
Disappearing possessions are a common occurrence with children and I love Pamela Butchart’s take on how one determined and feisty little girl turns the situation into a cracking mystery-solving adventure. Penelope, in her oversized spectacles, is just fabulous. Rather than getting upset about the whole situation, she logically works through what she knows and then endeavours to find the answer. Carlos, a very much unwitting participant in the whole thing, is quite literally dragged along for the ride.
Bursting with fun, clues to follow, a brilliant ending and with all of the gadgets and gear you’d expect to find in a classic mystery - magnifying glasses, Finder-Outer Kits, secret hiding places, torches, binoculars, plans, case books, cameras and of course, detective hats - it is perfect for first-time sleuths.
The eye-catching front cover just screams fun and giggles. Wonderfully imaginative yet very relatable and with illustrations that pop and zing off of each page with their dashes of fluorescent pink, this is another smash-hit from Pamela Butchart, one of the funniest writers of children’s books. You’ll be laughing your own smelly socks off. I hope that we get to see more of Penelope and Carlos with new cases to crack! With huge thanks to Bloomsbury for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review. Recommended for 3+.
