There’s nothing better than a wonderful, festive, feel-good story before bedtime on Christmas Eve and I have a Christmouse cracker for you. With nostalgia for the biggies and magic for the littlies, everyone will be eagerly anticipating Father Christmas’, and maybe a special little helper’s, arrival. It’s Christmas Eve and everyone is fast asleep…except for a lonely little mouse who resides in the grandfather clock. Mouse longs for a friend and a Christmas wish is granted with the most unexpected of arrivals. Santa and his reindeer are lost in a blizzard and desperately need navigational help. With Mouse leading the way, the presents will be delivered be in time for Christmas Day. But what will happen when Mouse has to return home? Has Santa saved the best gift for last… A Christmas wish, a sprinkling of magic and a dash of adventure will enchant in a wonderfully spun reworking of Clement Clarke Moore’s beloved ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. Proving heroes come in all shapes and sizes and that heartfelt Christmas wishes really do come true, this delightful tale of one little mouse’s very big Christmas Eve adventure is a marvellous and modern twist on a classic that will warm hearts on a cold winter’s night. This is the mice-est of festive reads and, like the shimmering front cover, is full of Christmas sparkle. The lyrical writing is beautiful, seamlessly weaving traditional lines from the original into a fresh and exciting rhyming story that just begs to be read aloud. Sarah’s spectacular illustrations are full of magic and adventure and despite the wintry setting it is warmth that radiates from each and every page. Little Mouse is adorable and his wish to have and to feel something that money cannot buy is enough to leave you watery eyed at first before a happy ending gives you the warm and fuzzies. The gentle message that material gifts are not always the best, or perhaps what we need most, is a lovely one for children to hear at this time of year.
Mouse’s Night Before Christmas has all the hallmarks of a classic and will become a go-to read for many a family on Christmas Eve. Recommended for 3+.
