Endearing animal duo Mini and Milo are back in another emotionally intelligent story that helps little people develop big life skills. Unlike those of her best friend Milo, Mini’s ears are massive. And with huger than huge ears, Mini should be fantastic at listening. Except she isn’t. And even when when she does almost listen she doesn’t always hear things correctly. When Mini fails to listen to important instructions and misses out on a class excursion she seeks advice from Milo. Will straightening, growing or cleaning ears help? Or is learning to use them the real solution to Mini’s listening struggles… The Big Flappy Ears is the second book in this delightful series that supports children’s development in key ares. Having explored the little voice in the head in book one, Mini and Milo now deliver a lesson in listening that will be welcomed by parents and teachers. Full of friendship and adorable characters, The Big Flappy Ears is a sweet, relatable and helpful exploration of listening that will resonate with children and adults. Lots of children find listening difficult and, like Mini, it’s not because they don’t want to it is simply because they don’t know how to do it. Like any skill, listening needs to be taught, nurtured and then practiced. A gentle story told with warmth and empathy and delightful illustrations bursting with colour and energy will ensure children love spending time with this pair and learn plenty of things along the way. Problem solving, working together and how to be a supportive friend are at the heart of Mini and Milo’s story. Relatable Mini is a character that children will identify with or recognise as someone they know. Her mis-hearings will be greeted with knowing nods as requests to clean the room become playtime, a demand to finish the game turns into one more turn and not listening carefully at school has all sorts of consequences. Childlike attempts to make her ears better will bring plenty of smiles as will the eventual solution (that works most of the time).
With its explicit focus on a necessary life skill this is a great picture book to share with young children and will support them in recognising the need to listen and why adults are constantly harping on about it. Big ears or not, everyone can become a listening legend with the help of Mini and Milo. A brilliant addition to the series and I look forward to spending more time with this charming pair. Recommended for 4+. With huge thanks to Walker for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
