Milo’s Monster is the sixth title in Tom Percival’s bestselling ‘Big Bright Feelings’ series and sees Milo joining Ruby, Ravi, Meesha, Tilda and Norman in helping children understand those big emotions that can be difficult to understand and control.
Millo loves living next to his best friend Jay, they do and share everything together. When new girl Suzi moves into the house across the road things change and suddenly Jay isn’t always around to play with. Milo hates being left out and soon the green-eyed monster of jealousy is an unwanted best friend and its miserable mutterings are filling Milo’s mind with bad thoughts. Can Milo find a way to free himself from the monster and repair his friendship with Jay…
Another uplifting and empowering picture book from a masterful storyteller and illustrator who is perfectly in touch with children and their feelings. Smart, entertaining and packed full of emotional intelligence, Milo and his unwanted new BFF help children to see how feelings of jealousy can quickly manifest, often unnecessarily, and how miserable they can make you feel.
Being left out is something that many children will experience at some point in life so it is easy to relate to Milo and the arrival of the green-eyed monster. Through a common situation - friendship, Percival gives children a way to understand the emotion of jealousy, how not to let it take complete control and, most importantly, a way to navigate out of the situation.
I have repeatedly written this about the series and I have no worries in reiterating it, they are brilliant books for opening up conversations about feelings and how to navigate them. Expert storytelling, a clever use of colour to show feelings, and brilliant protagonists will help all children get to grips with what can be quite a tricky emotion. It is a great addition to every young child’s bookshelf and will be warmly received by parents and teachers wanting to support children in their emotional development and giving them the tools to maintaining positive mental health. There is even a lovely foreword from Tom that includes great tips for when you’re feeling jealous. Like all the books in this series, this is a must have for the bookshelf. With huge thanks to Bloomsbury for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review. Recommended for 4+.
