This is the third book in the brilliant Meet the… series and having previously introduced planets and oceans, Carly Hart and Bethan Woollvin now present the weather.
The weather…one day warm and sunny, the next one cold and grey, the one after that windy and wet, the one after that…who knows what. But who is responsible for all of this sun, wind, rain, cloud and fog? Well that would be the work of the air, sun and water that are mixed up in all sorts of ways to give us many different types of weather throughout the year. Let’s take off and meet the weather…
Welcome to the wonderful world of weather! Join girl and dog as they jump in a hot air ballon and take to the skies on a vibrant and rhythmic journey encountering and learning about everything from playful clouds to whistling wind, booming thunder to thick fog, fancy snow to shimmering sunshine, and everything in between.
Jam-packed with fantastic rhymes and plenty of alliterative phrases that roll off the tongue just begging to be read aloud and bursting with eye-popping artwork, children will love this terrific flight and meeting ten different types of weather. The weather fun doesn’t end when the hot air ballon returns its passengers home with readers asked to take a peek out of the window and see what weather friends they can spot today. A brilliant weather-o-meter on the last pages supports weather talk.
The exciting adventure is the best kind of non-fiction narrative, it is fun and fact-filled with each weather character bursting with personality as they take centre stage and introduce themselves, highlighting their qualities and area of expertise. We meet plenty of new informative friends along the way: Cloud who loves to float and make shapes, Wind who enjoys whooshing wildly and occasionally offering a tickle, playmates Thunder and Lightning, Snow - the prettiest of them all, and Rain, who is happiest when splish, splash, sploshing to the ground and making everything wet through. Eyes attributed to the characters add a wonderful playful quality and I especially love Fog who has glasses to help it see better - Bethan is one of my favourite author-illustrators and it is because of little things such as this.
Instantly appealing, just one look at the front cover had me excited and eager to ‘Meet the Weather’, this marvellous meteorological extravaganza is the perfect introduction to clouds, sunshine and rainbows. Recommended for 4+. With huge thanks to Bloomsbury for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
