Sharks are often given a bad rep but there’s nothing to be frightened of in joining the cute, funny and very endearing stars of Rebecca Timmis’ new series. Let’s dive right in… Finley the reef shark lives in the town of Chumville. By day, he and his mates are ordinary shark kids. At night, they transform into famous musicians and are the four members of everyone’s favourite band…JAWSOME! Being a rockstar isn’t always cruisy. A lead singer quitting the band and an investigative reporter keen to sniff out the secret identities of the band members has Jawsome feeling far from awesome. Can the friends get to the bottom of the shark-nanigans, deliver a legendary concert and keep their double lives hidden… Ideally suited for emerging readers of six upwards, Jawsome is a fin-tastic new series of early readers that delivers exciting watery adventures, fishy fun and shark-tastic information whilst subtly embedding themes of friendship, teamwork, overcoming fears and seeking out the truth. Children will love hanging out with the coolest band in the ocean and the lively escapades and engaging storylines will have them swimming through the pages faster than Hunter can gobble up a Maths books (or perhaps not, she is frighteningly fast). Rebecca Timmis is one funny writer and she is in 'tuna' with her young audience who will be laughing their heads off as they gnash their way through a wonderful helping of fish puns and ocean wordplay - I think Rebecca has hooked every LOL possible out of the sea. Wanna-be pop star Kylie Mer-nogue, a herring called Red, news reporter Barry Mundi and TV show I’m a Shell-ebrity, Get Me Trout of Here all had me chuckling along. The two stories - Stage Bite and Finvestigated! - come in at around one-hundred-and-fifty pages each which may seem like a lot for children in the early years of primary school. Do not be fooled by the numbers, this is a highly accessible read that ticks all of the boxes. Generous layouts featuring oversized text and black and white illustrations work in perfect harmony, dishing up an immensely enjoyable, highly chomp-able and very accessible reading experience.
Another great addition to the ever growing selection of graphic novels and highly illustrated chapter books. A must read for ocean lovers, shark fans and anyone who wants to laugh-till-their-belly-hurts. Recommended for 6+. With huge thanks to Allen & Unwin and Albert Street Books for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
