Slime, or lack thereof, is no barrier to big dreams in this spirited garden adventure. Henry the snail wants to be just like the other snails. But without any slime, climbing is very tricky. Stickiness is surely the answer to his problems but when honey and tree sap end in disaster Henry sets about a fitness regime. Carrying strawberries, dragging pebbles, lifting peas and balancing peach pits on his belly make Henry super strong. Staring up at the tallest flower in the garden, Henry’s moment of truth awaits. Will he make it to the top… Starring an adorable cast of insects and with a gorgeous garden setting, Henry the Snail is an utterly delightful and gentle story of the perseverance, willpower and determination required to achieve one’s goal. Brilliant for sharing with young children, Henry and friends will help develop resilience whilst exemplifying the joys that can be found in offering help to others and sharing your talents. With can-do spirit and positive attitude in abundance, Henry is a charming little chap and his endeavours are wonderful and very funny. Coating himself with honey leads to a sticky situation with a bee, tree sap has its own perils and his garden gym is fabulous - who doesn’t want to see a snail toning his abs with peach pits and tail-curling a barbell with peas for weights. For any child who feels different or limited in their abilities, Henry is an inspirational role model. And whilst he might not be able to make it on his own he isn’t afraid to ask for help and his individual efforts are not without value as he is able to teach his garden buddies a few tricks that he has learnt long the way.
Katarina Macurová has s-nailed it! Recommended for 3+. With huge thanks to NewSouth Books for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
