Creative and talented penguin causes a stir in the Antarctic with his flipper-sewn, fashionable clothing.
Frank’s head is full of ideas. Some are brilliant, others…not so much. His penguin friends are not overly keen on Frank’s creativity, they prefer their world to be black and white. So when Frank presents his latest strange creation, a red hat, the penguins get very nervous indeed. Will Frank be able to convince his buddies that the hat is not evil or will everyone be waddling for their lives…
Frank’s Red Hat is my kind of picture book; in a monochrome world, Frank brings a fabulous splash of colour with his heart-warming antics. It is a story of doing what you love, persisting with your endeavours when others do not appreciate your creative genius and a fabulous penguin who is more than happy to step out of his comfort zone and in doing so will change life on the ice forever.
As is often the case when a creative genius presents something new to their captive audience, things don’t always go to plan. Not everyone appreciates change, especially penguins who are happy with life and who are quick to connect Frank’s inventions with the unfortunate things that often happen when he turns up with his latest gadget. The attitude of the penguins towards Frank and his creations is really interesting and offers up the opportunity for discussions around why they are so nervous of the red hat, how things out of the norm can be difficult to accept and the pros and cons of change.
Packed full of humour and with the occasional darker moment - surely Neville getting eaten by a killer whale had nothing to with Frank’s red hat - readers will love this icy winter tale and hopefully those with big ideas will take heart from Frank to never give up on their creative endeavours. There’s always someone who will appreciate a lovely red hat, you just need to find the right audience. With huge thanks to Walker for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review. Recommended for 4+.
