Katya Balen returns with another incredible novella, this time delivering an intense, personal and deeply moving story of self-discovery and a desperate search for answers to soothe troubled souls. Foxlight is one that is not to be missed. Abandoned as babies before being found with the foxes, Fen and Rey now live at the Light House where Lissa provides love, food and a warm bed. Unlike the other children who have contact with their mothers, Fen and Rey know nothing about their past or their mother so they use their imagination instead. The sisters long to know more and when a fox appears they are compelled to follow it. The wildlands are calling and a journey of discovery is about to begin… Foxlight is another wonderfully penned read from a master storyteller where love, loss, hope and belonging are discovered in the wildest of places. Achingly beautiful, the exploration of sisterhood, of the stories we need to make us whole and of nature at its most wild will break hearts before gently piecing them back together again.
Finding your place in the world can be tricky, especially when there is no past to hold on to, and as Fen narrates a dramatic adventure with rawness and honesty we are taken on an emotional tour-de-force as bonds are challenged, the strength of the human spirit is put to the test and young children share their innermost feelings. Katya writes beautiful children’s stories and her signature voice shines in every sentence with the lyrical, evocative and moving prose not just tugging at the heart strings but relentlessly strumming as she sends us out into the wildlands before bringing us to an ending that leaves a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. Storytelling of the highest order. The wildlands are calling and anyone who answers will be richly rewarded with a story that will last a lifetime. Recommended for 9+. With huge thanks to Bloomsbury for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
