‘STEM is everywhere. It’s the Science that helps us understand the natural world. It’s the Technology that uses knowledge and principles to invent tools. It’s the Engineering that solves problems and builds our modern environment. It’s the Maths that explores the patterns in the universe. Draw, imagine, create, explore, discover, invent and find out about our wonderful world with this bumper book of STEM and STEAM activities from Australia’s favourite maths teacher, Eddie Woo.’ Everything in our lives is rooted in STEM, and Eddie Woo, Australia’s favourite Maths teacher and co-presenter of Channel 10’s ‘The Ultimate Classroom’, doesn’t just want everyone to not know it, he wants to empower people of all ages to recognise and begin to understand how Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering are connected to their lives. This is the book for kids who want fun ways to engage themselves with the wonders and magic of STEM. It educates, inspires and provides hours of activities in a bumper read as Eddie investigates transport, space, patterns, structures and robotics. There’s even room for art, turning the acronym STEM into STEAM. Passionate about his subject, Eddie allows everyone, old and young, the chance to understand and explore with his insightful and accessible look at the ‘wonderful world of STEM.’ There are facts that will amaze and practical and real world examples to help explain various concepts with Eddie always encouraging the probing of new ideas. Never diving too deep into anything, the brief starting points are excellent teasers for further research. As children navigate through they will be kept busy with word searches, quizzes, problem solving, folding, construction, drawing, mapping and designing. Observing gravity via a marble run, sound building techniques with marshmallows and spaghetti, and converting potential energy to kinetic energy with popsicle sticks are personal favourites. With plenty of space to scribble and draw in and with the answers to everything in a top secret section at the end, this is a book that kids can really lose themselves in.
Presented very much like one of the those bumper puzzle books that you might pick up at the airport to take with you on vacation, it will be a hit with those who love all things STEM and enjoy sitting down with a varied activity book. Sure to stimulate and challenge the grey matter. Recommended for 7+. With huge thanks to Pan Macmillan for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
