A duckling with bags of heart and personality takes the first steps to independence and fleeing the nest in this gorgeous picture book.
Duckling has squabbled with her mother and now there’s only thing for it. She must run away. Past the hopscotching chicks, under the swinging kittens, over the swimming piglets and out of the farm in search of pastures new. Duckling is never, ever coming back. Is she ready to live alone or will the love of a mother pull her back home…
A sweet and heartwarming story of an upset duckling who after having time to process and calm down comes to her senses and realises where she really wants to be. After all, there is no place quite like home and the unconditional love and warm embrace of a mother. This gentle exploration of big feelings and frustrations reassures children that they will be loved no matter what and recognises the importance of needing time alone to work through emotions.
We’ve all felt like Duckling. I have vague memories of myself and my sister, on seperate occasions, threatening to leave home. It probably went something like this…storm out of house in a huff, bemoaning how unfair life is and that parents are being completely unreasonable; get as far as the end of the drive, maybe even the next-door-neighbour’s house before deciding that the point had been made and it was probably for the best to return home.
Beautiful illustrations and a simple story will enchant young readers and leave them feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Perfect for parent child story-time, definitely one to snuggle up with. Recommended for 2+. With huge thanks to Allen & Unwin for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
