I love a picture book that recognises the accomplishments of an individual, and the life of Dorothy Wall, better known to her legion of fans as Dorrie, is brought to the pages in this child-friendly fictionalised picture book biography thanks to the creative talents of Tania McCartney.
Born in New Zealand, Dorrie loved to play, sing and dance. When she wasn’t doing those things she loved to create and explore the great outdoors. A move to Australia - the land of heat, deserts and beaches - and a chance meeting with a koala outside her window would be the inspiration for a life-changing moment. Blinky Bill was born and his stories would capture hearts and entertain a nation for years…
Full of inspiration and imagination, Dorrie celebrates the life of Dorothy Wall, the creator of one of Australia’s most beloved and iconic characters, koala Blinky Bill. Bursting with warmth and oodles of charm, it is a splendid way to learn about a person who did some wonderful things in her life and gave a nation a character that remains as popular as ever. The cheeky and loveable larrikin, who has long outlived his creator, is rapidly approaching his 90th birthday and has a movie adaptation that can be found on Netflix.
With an ever-present koala throughout, Dorrie’s childhood and creative journey are beautifully told and exquisitely illustrated with so much to look at on each page. Dorrie appears as a young girl throughout the book and whilst this is not an accurate depiction of actual events it adds a fantastical and magical whimsy that young children will love. Those with creative minds and big imaginations will find themselves transported into Dorrie’s world, dreaming up their own stories of mischief and adventure. And who knows, perhaps the next Dorrie will find themselves reading this very book.
For those seeking a more accurate account of Dorrie’s story a page of back matter provides a succinct and child-friendly retelling of a creative life, the many struggles faced, the inspiration for the Blinky Bill stories and the rather sad ending she experienced. Dorothy Wall and her achievements deserve to be celebrated, and her life, often difficult, her work, seemingly undervalued, need to be remembered. It is comforting that her story is introduced to a new generation. Read it. Recommended for 4+. With huge thanks to Harper Collins for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
