Pigeon has tried to drive the bus now he has his sights set on something far grander…Santa’s sleigh. Christmas is a busy time of year for Santa and with lots of presents to wrap he needs to step away from the sleigh for a while. But that’s not a good idea with an excitable Pigeon lurking who is very, very keen to take Santa’s sleigh for a quick spin. It should all be fine though as Santa can trust you to keep on an eye on things, right? Just don’t let the Pigeon drive the sleigh. Are you up to the challenge or will you give into the ever demanding Pigeon… Mo Willems’ Pigeon flies in for some seasonal shenanigans with a Christmas wish in a brilliantly funny, festive caper. You’ll need to be at your bah humbug best as this charming and sneaky bird is full of all sorts of tricks to get you to let him drive the sleigh…you’ll be part of a Christmas miracle, he’s not that naughty and you are oh so nice, and don’t forget his Santa credentials - how hard can present-delivering and cookie-eating be? Never has such a sweet and simple story been funnier or more perfectly executed. Mo has delivered a Christmas cracker that will have the whole family in raptures. Children who have begged to do something will totally relate to Pigeon’s desire, growing desperation and playbook of tactics whilst adults will share a cheeky smile. Clad in festive hat and talking directly to the reader through speech bubbles, Pigeon is absolutely hilarious as he gently appeals to the reader’s softer side, grows increasingly frustrated, and then lets out an ear-piercing, ‘LET ME DRIVE THE SLEIGH!!!’ as his exasperation boils over. But with no steer-y thing, clutch or honker, sleigh-driving is not as easy as it sounds. And by the end, after a meeting with one of Santa’s rather smelly helpers, Pigeon is sure that a sleigh ride is not for him anyway. Perhaps he’s better suited to delivering Easter eggs. Oversized text and large, colourful expression-filled artwork, that perfectly captures Pigeon’s merry and mischievous personality, mark this one as a perfect read-aloud to share with the kids. Don’t miss the endpapers which are a treat too.
Clever, witty and raising issues around responsibility and persuasion, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Sleigh is an absolute hoot and will bring a sleigh load of jingle-bell joy to young readers who will ho-ho-ho from beginning to end. A festive romp! Recommended for 2+.
