From supporting children on the streets to making clean drinking water, developing technology to aid the blind to raising awareness about mental health. Kids around the world are changing the world for the better…
Nothing ever changes until somebody does something and the twelve children featured in this book are testament to the difference that one person’s individual efforts can make. It is a brilliant book that should motivate and inspire children of all ages to use their skills, passions and interests to help others. Whether talents and passions lie in sport, technology, the arts, gardening or something else, there is always a way to put that talent to work and to do something for someone else.
We meet children from around who are involved in a variety of projects and initiatives. The children at Saint Jordi primary school in Spain help older people feel less alone by working together to look after an orchard. Marie-Astrid Mence, a black ballet dancer, dances for Ballet Black and together they support and encourage future generations of young black ballet dancers. Mohamad Al Jounde, a Syrian refugee, set up a school within a Lebanon refugee camp to ensure that children continued to receive an education. Katie Stagliano, from the USA, grows fruit and vegetables and donates the produce to people in need.
Illustrated by Yas Imamura, the detailed double page spreads show each child in their own environment and making a positive impact on others. Loll Kirby’s short and succinct text introduces each child and their project with further short snippets of information dotted around the page. A useful section at the back offers advice on how to help and make a difference and includes a list of websites where further information about the featured children and their projects can be found. Readers will be amazed, and rightly so, to learn of some of the incredible things that children are achieving in all corners of the world. From small and simple acts to those that have had a far reaching impact within a country and the wider world. A superb book that will hopefully encourage other children to follow in the footsteps of these twelve inspiring role-models. Recommended for 5+.
