S. F. Said delivers a cracking adventure, some big life lessons and cat martial-arts in a brilliantly told and action-packed story.

Varjak Paw is a Mesopotamian Blue who leads a pampered life in the Contessa’s house overlooking the city. Whilst the rest of his family enjoy their cushy lifestyle, Varjak Paw longs for adventures in the outside world like ones that the Elder Paw, Varjak’s grandfather, tells him about their ancestor Jalal.

When the Contessa dies and a sinister looking man with two big, black cats turns up, Varjak senses something is wrong. And he’s not the only one, the Elder Paw shares his concerns and sends Varjak into the Outside world in search of a solution. But does Varjak have what it takes to survive in a gritty world of cat-gangs, dangerous metal machines, growling dogs and mysterious Vanishings…

Varjak Paw is a thrilling adventure story about a plucky little cat who must quickly learn to navigate the Outside world if he is to save his family. Outside of the comfort of the family home, Varjak finds himself in an unfamiliar world surrounded by dangers and every turn of the page is filled with tension and suspense as you never know what challenge the brave little feline will have to face up to next.

Children will love joining Varjak as he makes friends with Tam and Holly, confronts and scraps with the toughest cats in the city - Ginger, Razor and Sally Bones - and goes in search of a dog that will talk to him. It is a wonderful coming-of-age story as the runt of the family experiences a journey of self-discovery and steps up and proves that he is not only very capable but is also wise beyond his tender years. Guided by the lessons from Jalal - who talks to Varjak in his dreams - Varjak learns the legendary ‘Way’ as he masters cat-like ninja skills. Ultimately using all of these skills to save his family, his friends and uncover the mystery behind the man and his two cats.
