The legendary Guns N’ Roses rock anthem Sweet Child O’ Mine gets the picture book treatment in a vibrant and loving twist that is a far cry from the band's traditional image.
The story shows father and daughter as they explore the world together. Beginning at home, the girl sings into a microphone whilst her dad plays guitar. The pair head outside enjoying blue skies and dashing through fields of flowers, butterflies and bees. They wade through a stream, shelter from a storm and eventually meet a smiling lady. The trio make their way to the Fair Grounds where a local music festival is being held and father and daughter take to the stage and perform to a diverse audience of happy revellers.
First thing to say is that it is impossible to read this book without singing the lyrics. It’s as almost as if this song has been written with a picture book in mind such is the ease that the lyrics transfer to visuals. Song lyrics have the power to evoke different emotions in all of us and Sweet Child O’ Mine works in this picture book as a lovely ode to daughter from father. Despite originally being written about a girlfriend, the lyrics work perfectly well for the book that takes its inspiration from Maya and Natalia Rose, ‘two young roadies’ who often accompany the band on the road.
The book simply shows the joy and love within a family and is a celebration of music and how it can bring everyone together. Jennifer Zivoin’s artistic spreads are an explosion of colour, and love and warmth and happiness radiate from the pages.
Die-hard Guns N’ Roses fan or not, all parents and children will appreciate this warm-hearted book that is perfect for reading together.
