She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World; Chelsea Clinton, illustrated by Alexandra Boiger
In She Persisted, Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former president of the United States of America, Bill Clinton, introduces young children to thirteen inspirational women. All faced challenges, all had one thing in common, they persisted.
For years, women have had to fight to be treated like equals. Whether it be equal pay, the right to vote, the right to sit, the right to join the same clubs as men, the right to share sporting facilities, the right for equal employment opportunities, the list goes on. Who knows where we would be without courageous women, bold women, women who were willing to make sure their voices were heard when the easier option would have been to stay quiet. Women like these…
Harriet Tubman, Virginia Apgar, Claudette Colvin, Sally Ride. Just some of the extraordinary women that you get to meet in this brilliant book that celebrates inspirational women who have had a significant role in shaping the USA. The thirteen women featured come from all walks of life and ultimately went on to excel in a variety of fields including sport, legal, academia, medicine, politics, entertainment and the arts.
The women faced many challenges: overcoming disability, fighting for equal rights, proving that women were as capable as the men (if not more so), standing up to society, challenging gender and racial prejudice and overcoming language barriers. These women suffered bullying, belittling and put-downs. Yet they would not be silenced or succumb to the expectations of family and society or accept something that they knew was wrong, unfair or unjust. They were courageous, they risked everything and they pursued their dreams. Many, if not all, leaving lasting legacies.
Each inspirational figure is presented over a double page that includes wonderful artwork, a short paragraph with a brief history of the person, the struggles faced and the accomplishments. "She persisted,” written in a different coloured font throughout and in bold type face stands-out on each page. My favourite feature, a powerful and moving quote attributed to each of the women.
She Persisted is such an inspirational read and one that all young children, especially girls, should have the opportunity to read. When you are told to be quiet, speak up. When you are told to sit down, stand up. When you are told your dreams are impossible, dream bigger. And remember, be persistent.
Girl power at its very best!
