Pizza and Taco is the first in a new series of graphic novels about two best friends from Stephen Shaskan.
Pizza and Taco are the absolute best of friends. They finish each other’s sentences and even have a special dance. When they cannot decide which of them is the best they have a vote but vote counting Pizza is a big Cheaty McCheato. With votes tied, the pair call in the service of BFF’s Hamburger and Hot Dog but that just makes things worse. Perhaps there’s more to being the best than votes. But can the two learn the true meaning of being the best…
Pizza and Taco is a delightful addition to the selection of graphic novels for newly independent readers about two delicious things to eat, pizza and tacos. But which one is best? There can only be one winner, right? Pizza has lots of toppings to go on it, including pineapple (which I love on a pizza) but Taco has lots of things that can go in it like salad and cheese and beef (mmm delicious). Too difficult for me to choose which one is best but Pizza and Taco are determined to find the answer.
The humorous story has the two main protagonists, who are illustrated as a slice of pizza and a stuffed taco, try and work out which one of them is the best. There is lots of banter, lots of “YAAAS” and lots of silly fun as the two argue, vote and have fun on waterslides all in the name of being the best. But it turns out that being the best is perhaps not all about votes and backsies, it is more to do with butt bumps, fist pumps, a brilliant friendship and recognising what makes each other awesome. The action plays out in large panels, playful illustrations and simple speech bubble dialogue.
I do have one issue with the story and that is the behaviour of Pizza and Taco towards Hamburger and Hot Dog. Whilst I understand it is all meant to be playful and lighthearted it could be interpreted as bullying and that is something that I would not want readers to find funny or to think is OK.
Pizza and Taco will be gobbled up young readers and will leave them hungry for more. I’m off to get a slice of pizza, or perhaps a taco. Oh I don’t know, it’s too hard to decide, maybe i’ll just have both.
