Kate Messner, author of ‘Over and Under the Snow’ and ‘Up In the Garden and Down in the Dirt’ unveils the secret world and life that exists ‘under the pond’ in this fabulous read.
A mother and her young son head out onto the lake in a little rowing boat. Above the surface they glide through lily pads, rushes and reeds and observe red-winged blackbirds, a moose and turtles. Then the boys asks, “What’s down there?” And with his mum as his guide he discovers a whole new world of incredible animals, plants and eco-systems…
I love this book so much as it just shows that what is going on above the surface is definitely not the whole story. On the journey over the lake, mother and son explore a variety of plant-life and animals. The story is packed full with information on the plants and animals that contribute to the underwater eco-system. With careful guidance younger readers will begin to understand how the things that are living in the lake are all connected and how the eco-system is able to survive and thrive.
I love the illustrations by Christopher Silas Neal, they are packed with earthy tones and the colours of nature; think greens, browns and blues. Messner’s authors note includes lots of detail on plant eco-systems and there is a lovely section at the end that has lots of information about the animals that feature in the story.
This gorgeous book is a fabulous journey over and under the pond and is a must read for any aspiring naturalist. I’m off pond-dipping to see what I can find!
