Nicola Davies creates beautiful books about nature and the environment and My Butterfly Bouquet is another brilliant book. My Butterfly Bouquet introduces readers to one of nature’s most gorgeous, precious and delicate insects, the butterfly. And this book is a celebration of these amazing insects and the fabulous colours they bring to our world.
A little girl arrives home from hospital in the midst of winter. The garden outside her home is a blank canvas of white, devoid of colour. Her Dad takes her on a visit to a greenhouse packed with beautiful butterflies and together they observe these marvellous little creatures.
Taking inspiration from what they have seen, the girl and her family create their own garden filled with essentials for the butterflies that they hope to attract in the Spring and Summer. When the garden is filled with butterflies everyone admires the success of their work and the girl is full of renewed energy and in the words of her Dad she is, “Blooming like a flower and growing like a weed.”
This is such a beautiful book that will bring as much happiness and warmth to the reader as it does to the little girl who is transformed after a visit to the butterfly garden. The delightful narrative is filled with brilliant butterfly facts. Did you know that butterflies are hunted by many other insects and animals so they need to be hard to catch? Yes they can move quickly and love to dart and dance through the sky but some are also specially camouflaged so they can blend in with trees and leaves and those brightly coloured ones are actually poisonous and the colours secretly mean don’t eat me! Ever wondered why when butterflies land on you it always feels like they are tickling you? Well they kind of are, they are tasting you with their feet to see what you would be good for. Luckily for us, butterflies don’t think we are much good for anything so generally fly away. Readers will also learn about where butterflies lay their eggs and the magical process of how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly - starting out as a caterpillar, entering a chrysalis, then returning as a butterfly - incredible stuff.
The characters in the book are BAME and this is lovely and refreshing. The illustrations by Hannah Peck are fantastic and I love the inside front and back covers that are filled with butterflies and plants.
At the back of the book there’s lots of fabulous information on butterflies and their relationship with flowers, advice on how to help protect butterflies and the butterfly life cycle.
By the end of the book I was full of hope and positivity and had a great desire to go in search of my nearest butterfly garden. A beautiful book and a must read for any young nature lovers, particularly those with any interest in butterflies.
