Mr. Shaha’s Recipes for Wonder: Adventures in Science Round the Kitchen Table; Alom Shaha, illustrated by Emily Robertson
Elicit wonder, curiosity and a love for science with this superb hands-on book that proves that we can all be scientists. Grab your lab coat and safety goggles and get ready to experiment…
Join science teacher Mr. Shaha as he expertly guides you through five areas of science using a mixture of fun experiments and sharing his scientific knowledge. See Newton’s Third Law in action through a ballon-powered car; make your own musical instrument using straws; discover how to separate the colours of white light into a spectrum using your own rainbow tube; explore atoms through the magic of colour-changing cabbage; carry out some daffodil dissection to learn all about the parts of a flower.
Experiments are split into five topics: Motion; Sound; Electricity, Magnetism and Light; Atoms; and Living Things. Each topic begins with an introduction followed by a selection of experiments that can be easily carried out using household items. There are eighteen experiments to have a go at and they all sound fantastic.
Experiments are presented like recipes, complete with ingredients list, step by step method and pictorial steps. Lots of question prompts are provided to get children to think like a scientist and will ensure ‘minds on’ as well as ‘hands on’. A ‘Mr. Shaha says…’ section concludes each experiment and these provide valuable explanations as to what the experiment shows and further explores the science.
Mr. Shaha makes science fun, cool, exciting and accessible. His writing is engaging and interesting and Emily Robertson’s colourful illustrations add to the huge appeal of this book. Both adults and children will enjoy gathering around the kitchen table and experimenting together.
Recipe’s for Wonder is a huge explosion of scientific FUN! I would have had a much better understanding of scientific principles, concepts and ideas had Mr. Shaha been my science teacher. Thanks to this brilliant book we can all experience the joy of a Mr. Shaha and his super science teaching!
