Ginger Green is Absolutely MAD for Birthdays! (Mostly); Kim Kane, illustrated by Jon Davis17/3/2021
This is the second series starring the delightfully funny and just a little bit feisty, friendly fox Ginger Green. Moving on from her adventures as Ginger Green, Playdate Queen, this series targets slightly older readers and is perfect for fans of Tom Gates and WeirDo.
Ginger Green is turning eight years old and to celebrate she is having a big princess themed birthday party. Together with her best friend Lottie, Ginger Green has planned the perfect party. The princess castle cake has been designed, party games have been planned, party bags have been filled, the party table is set and princess dresses and crowns are ready to wear. Disaster strikes on the morning of the party when Lottie is poorly and cannot attend. This is doubly disastrous as Lottie had an extra special job to do…to keep an eye on crazy Maisy. When Maisy and no-pants Penny start behaving badly at the party will Ginger Green be able to summon up her princess powers to save the party from disaster… Parties never go as planned and Ginger Green’s party has all the drama, tears and falling-outs that are so typical when over-excited children get together. Games going wrong, things getting broken, dresses getting ruined and the tears and tantrums are never-ending. Children will find all of this very familiar and parents will have a wry smile at the situations that Ginger Green’s parents find themselves dealing with. Even though it is not the party that Ginger and Lottie had planned, Ginger does her very best to make the most of the situation in the end, even able to laugh at her smarty-pants cake after the princess castle cake is eaten by two naughty guests. Luckily for her misbehaving guests, Ginger Green is the best of friends and through her actions messages of forgiveness and friendship are explored.
The story is told in simple sentences and the pages are filled with a variety of fonts and black and white illustrations. Lots of bonus content is included after the story including instructions for glitter slime, decorating paper crowns and rules for several royal princess party games.
Birthday parties never quite go as they should even when you have the best laid out plans. Luckily, Ginger Green is able to make the best of any situation and there is nothing that cannot be resolved with a slice of bare bottom smarty-pants cake. Recommended for 6+.
