I do like a wordless picture book as it encourages the reader to create their own story around the images in-front of them. Egg is a funny tale about an egg that is laid to stand out.

When an egg turns up that is round at the top and pointy at the bottom, the regular eggs do not know what to think. Should they accept the egg as it is or try and make it look like them? Will turning it upside down help? What about if they dress it up and put a hat on its bottom? Or perhaps odd egg can teach the regular eggs that you can be an egg regardless of what way up you are.

This wordless picture book, not counting the word ‘EGG’, is all about fitting in and being accepted by others. Being a wordless book this story is all about the illustrations and Sue Hendra & Paul Linnet have conveyed their message about accepting others in a light-hearted and entertaining way. The story is simple enough but there are opportunities for wider discussion about the need to conform to the expectations that society has and celebrating differences.
