Meet Dixie’O Day and his best friend Percy, the stars of a series of delightful early chapter books from mother and daughter combo Shirley Hughes and Clara Vulliamy. Dixie and Percy love going on adventures and their first outing together is a very eventful car journey.
Despite its age, Dixie is proud of his car and likes nothing more than going for a drive with his best friend Percy. The car might not be very fast, is definitely not great at going up hills and the brakes might not quite work as well as they should but Dixie loves it. What Dixie does not love is his show-off neighbour, Lou Ella, and her fancy pink sports car.
When the All-Day Race race from Didsworth to Dodsworth is announced, Dixie has his heart set on winning but so does Lou Ella. Who will win? And will Dixie’s car make it to the finish? In a race full of twists, turns and mishaps anything can happen and having the fastest car may not mean finishing first…
The first Dixie and Percy adventure is a thrilling race around the countryside that will be a hit with children who love cars. The excitement and thrills come often with close shaves on level crossings involving trains, untimely breakdowns and a perilous encounter with the cliff edge. Hughes and Vulliamy deliver the perfect mix of excitement, danger and peril that will keep readers entertained throughout.
The book is absolutely delightful. Everything about it is just catered for the needs of young readers, the little hardback is the perfect fit for small hands and beautiful illustrations in a simple colour palette of white, black and red feature on every page. It is an adorable early chapter book and with seven chapters it is perfect for enjoying over the course of a week.
The inclusion of lots of little extras really enhances the reading experience. Readers will find question and answer sessions with characters and authors, a portrait gallery, maps, games and a quiz. And just in case one Dixie and Percy adventure wasn’t enough, there is a sneak-peek at the first chapter of book two, ‘The Great Diamond Robbery’.
