For fans of Barry Loser comes a new series by author of funny children’s books, Jim Smith. His latest offering is a funny mystery detective series.
Melvin Pebbles is far from thrilled to be leaving his friends behind and moving from Hokum City to Donut Island, a round city with a hole in the middle. Then he meets Rhubarb Plonsky who is full of excitement and is into solving mysteries. Rhubarb is the founder and leader (the only other member being Yoshi Fujikawa) of The Daily Donut Club. Unfortunately not much happens in Donut, the most exciting things that she has solved so far involve a cat who went for a long walk and the curious case of the missing cucumber slice. But then The Donut Diner start handing out Donut Hole Monsters and they have a strange effect on their owners. This is one mystery that is perhaps worth solving…
Danger at Donut Diner is a wacky and weird mystery with a plot that moves at pace. The characters are just as quirky as their names and there is a nice mix of BAME characters included in the narrative. The read is full of Jim Smith’s trade-mark zany humour. Young readers will revel in the silly jokes while adults may find themselves cringing. Each page is a delight, filled with playful illustrations and an accessible text layout. The story is easy to read and should keep the attention of the most reluctant of readers.
The Daily Donut Club will be back soon to solve another mystery, Attack of the Haunted Lunchbox is expected to be published in early September 2020.
