Spike Surfs; Robert Lorenzon

Most of us have spent a few minutes, or in my case, several hours, being entertained and laughing at videos of canines living their best lives and enjoying extreme sports like surfing and skateboarding. One such dog with a love of riding the waves is Spike, and his wonderful story is told in this fabulous little book from the aptly named publisher Wild Dog Books.

Spike’s story starts at The Lost Dogs Home where he was waiting for a loving owner to give him a new home. When Rob Lorenzon went looking for a dog, Spike had found his paw-fect match and the two quickly became the best of friends.

Rob loved going to the beach and whilst he would head off into the ocean for a surf, Spike, who was nervous around the water, would have fun on the sand. One day though, Rob modified his surfboard, made room for two and a new surfing superstar was born…Spike!

Told from the perspective of Spike, this true rags to riches story is a woofing great read. Featuring lots of cracking photographs and a simple narrative, Spike narrates his heart-warming journey with love and affection as he gets his wish for a new home, embraces new surroundings, overcomes his fears and relishes every opportunity to ride the waves.

Pets bring friendship and unbridled joy to many and the happiness that Spike and Rob bring to each others lives jumps out from every single page. Like white bread and sprinkles or a meat pie and tomato sauce, Spike and Rob just go perfectly together, if ever there were a pet and a person destined to meet each other then it is these two.

Spike even has his own instagram - spikesurfs - where his bio reads, ‘From the Lost Dogs Home now a dog surfing champion 2018. Lover of surfing, SUP, bones, digging and spaghetti; I can't wait to get wet!’ The page is full of photographs of Spike in action, hanging out with his mates and generally living his best life. Not bad for the rescue dog who was once scared of the water.

Whilst Spike is one of the lucky ‘lost dogs’ who has found his forever home, there are many that are still waiting and this number has has risen dramatically in recent months. They are just waiting for their forever home and whilst you may not find a surfing superstar like Spike you will find a loyal and loving companion that will be forever grateful for the home that you are able to provide.

Like Spike’s surfing career this cracking little book is a tail-wagging success!
