I love Christmastime and books like this are one of the main reasons. Two of Australia’s best, author Collette Dinnigan and illustrator Luke Sciberras, bring the sights of Australia to the pages along with some lovely Christmas vibes in this festive tour of Australia.
Christmas Eve, and Santa’s sleigh was overflowing with wrapped presents. Leaving the North Pole behind, the reindeers took flight into the night sky and Santa’s broad smile filled his face. One of many stops on his busiest night of the year, Australia. Santa was always excited to visit this extraordinary land of changing landscapes, iconic landmarks and unique animals. Come hop aboard Santa’s sleigh for a magical sleigh ride around a country like no other…
Bursting with Australian landmarks, native wildlife and plenty of Christmas spirit, Santa Loves Australia will bring Christmas magic and sparkle to all. Packaged between present-filled end papers and beautifully illustrated by Luke Sciberras’ sweeping brushstrokes, the festive story, that features some delicious language, is a wonderful celebration of a special country and follows a Christmas Eve trip that, and I’ll whisper this quietly, may well be Santa’s favourite one. And it’s easy to understand why.
Leaving a trail of confetti and guided by the stars of the Southern Cross in the Milky Way, Santa and his reindeer take a magical tour of Australia. Breathtaking sights are in abundance as Santa delivers presents to the various states and territories and there’s plenty of fun along the way. The emus at Uluru are sprinkled with snowballs from the North Pole and carols are sung with kookaburras in Queensland. Santa marvels at the phosphorescence at the Great Barrier Reef and cannot resist flying through the mouth of Sydney’s Luna Park. There’re animals aplenty in the ancient forest of Tasmania, lizards to say hello to on the Outback Highway and even a snappy crocodile in the rivers of Western Australia.
Children will love seeing how the state they live in has been represented and children reading in countries other than Australia will be fascinated by the different sights of this marvellous country. A glossary is included that provides fantastic further information on places and animals - being English and not native to Australia this helped me no end. Little touches like this really enhance the reading experience and I’m sure children will love finding out more about the various places and animals. With thanks to Simon & Schuster for this early Christmas treat. Recommended for 3+.
