All across Australia, ancient wonders are waiting to be explored. From the incredible lava tubes at Undara to the mighty ‘Devils Marbles in the back of beyond’, the Zebedee Springs to the Jim Jim Falls at Kakadu, the Great Ocean Road to dinosaur footprints in outback Winton. So grab your binoculars, your backpack and your spirit for adventure then hop on board the minibus and come along for the road-trip of a lifetime. ‘Adventure is out there, our country is calling.’
Australia is a fascinating country with a rich and varied landscape shaped by events from history. Whether you are interested in hiking, extreme sports, hunting for precious gem stones, historical sights, the fossilised remains of those that have gone before us or simply admiring stunning views, there is something to get excited about in this fabulous book.
Our Country: Ancient Wonders is an epic road trip around Australia with author Mark Greenwood and illustrator Frané Lessac offering a fantastic and fact-filled exploration of country that will educate and amaze in equal measure. As we join our intrepid and curious travellers aboard their minibus we visit fourteen wonders located in different states and territories. The book begins with fantastic endpapers that show a map of Australia and the places visited on the journey and closes with a useful timeline and helpful glossary. Closing endpapers feature another map with further sights to explore and offer the opportunity for independent research or perhaps the planning of the readers’ own road-trip.
Each gorgeously illustrated double-page spread reveals a different ancient wonder; the rich and vibrant colours capturing the natural beauty and awe and wonder of each location. Text, written in two different fonts, tells the story of the road-trip and informative text briefly explains the various sights with references to historical context, timeframe, geography, geology and connection to country.
This is a road-trip like no other, definitely a once in a lifetime experience and is one that is sure to inspire. Whether readers want to see the sights first-hand or choose to carry out a visit from the comfort of their own home, Our Country: Ancient Wonders is guaranteed to encourage readers of all ages to appreciate the ancient wonders that date back thousands, sometimes millions, and in rare cases, billions, of years. I would love to do the road trip myself, maybe one day. With huge thanks to Walker Books for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review. Recommended for 7+.
