Who doesn’t love electronics and the thrill of buying and owning the latest technological gadgets? But what happens to the mobile phones, computers, DVD players, televisions and games consoles that we no longer need? Some may end up in charity shops, others may be passed on to someone else, many will end up in landfill. As for the rest, they often find their way to the most unlikely of places.
Thirteen year old Theo lives by the dump in a shack with five chickens. With a sack for a pillow and cardboard for a bed he spends his days searching the piles of unwanted electronics for ‘treasures’ that he can exchange for cash to buy food. Phil Hickes first introduced readers to Aveline Jones - lover of ghosts, ghouls and all things supernatural - in September 2020. After what has seemed like an impossibly long wait for a sequel, Aveline is back in another irresistibly creepy middle-grade adventure that will put the frighteners on the bravest of souls.
Whilst not her perfect summer holiday, Aveline is excited to be spending a few days in the small village of Norton Wick as she will be able to explore an ancient stone circle that she has read about in a book. The Witch Stones are the stuff of legend in the sleepy countryside village and Aveline is thrilled to meet the uber-cool, care-free, wildly unpredictable and mysterious Hazel who has all all sorts of secrets and stories about them. But Hazel has her own dangerous secret and Aveline needs to find out what it is before it is too late…
I love finding new graphic novels, especially for younger readers, and this one is a lovely introduction to the genre for readers aged five and up.
Welcome to Bugbopolis, a colourful and vibrant city where you’ll never have trouble buying a hat, may witness the occasional candy floss factory explosion and if you were to visit 18 Hijinks Row you’d find the home of two best friends, Bumble and Snug. A day out and a picnic out for best friends Bumble and Snug sounds perfect. That is until they accidentally find themselves on a deserted island and discover buried treasure. Digging up the treasure has consequences though as it is hidden for a reason and if the pirates don’t get it back there will be a monstrously big tentacled problem to deal with…
In 2020, Alex English delivered a debut book that was one of my favourite reads of the year so I was very excited for the sequel.

In 2020, J. M. Joseph introduced the world to the ‘hottest’ accidental superhero, and Aidan Sweeney, better known as Fire Boy, is back in another sizzlingly hot adventure. If you haven’t read the first book in the series, then seriously, why not? And secondly, it is best that you do as the action picks up exactly where the first story left off.
Aidan Sweeney, aka Fire Boy, has mastered his fiery superpower and is loving his life as the star of Zarathustra’s Travelling Circus. Life still has it’s challenges though, people are determined to unmask the identity of Fire Boy, he is about to be left behind as the circus heads off on tour and his Granny is still acting like a she-bear. |
