Long before Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore and Harry Potter there was Miss. Cackle’s Academy for Witches, Miss. Headbroom and a witch by the name of Mildred Hubble.
First year Mildred Hubble is a witch-in-training and not a very good one at that. She struggles to fly on a broomstick, mixing a potion correctly is beyond her and she’s constantly getting into trouble - most recently turning teacher’s-pet Ethel into a pig. Miss. Headbroom is not impressed.
But when Mildred discovers a terrible plot to take over the school she has the opportunity to prove that she is not the worst witch after all…
Jill Murphy casts the perfect spell in her wonderfully fun story of mishaps and magical muddles starring the most delightful of young protagonists. Laughter, adventure and witchcraft are in abundance in the story that follows the hapless Mildred Hubble and her trials and tribulations in her first term at witch school. Whilst we may not all get to attend Miss. Cackle’s Academy we can all relate to Mildred who never means for things to go wrong but finds that they so often do and attracts attention for all of the wrong reasons.
The Worst Witch is an absolute classic in children’s literature and it feels like a book that all children need to read before they enter the popular wizarding world of Harry Potter - it is a gateway that all wanna-be magical muggles should have to pass through, preferably riding a broomstick. An absolute must read!
