Peanut, Butter, & Crackers is the first in a new series of graphic novels from author Paige Braddock who takes inspiration from her own pets and gives readers a warm-hearted and funny read.
Crackers is a dog with a complicated to do list: bark, sleep, bark, wee and sniff. There’ll probably be some squirrels that need chasing too. Butter is a cat who dreams of boxes and can openers and loves licking butter. The two have the perfect life until their human comes home with a new addition…a puppy.
Puppy Peanut is needy, noisy and knows absolutely nothing. Peanut thinks he has found his fur-ever home but is there room for one more resident? Crackers and Butter certainly don’t think so. They just need to show their human just what a problem the new puppy is…
Peanut, Butter and Crackers is a delightful addition to the selection of graphic novels for newly independent readers that will be a guaranteed hit with animal lovers. Pet owners will relate to the antics of a new puppy who enjoys settling into his new home and exploring his surroundings much to the frustrations of the exisiting pets.
The three protagonists are all loveable. Seeing the world through the eyes of an animal is always a source of great amusement and their thoughts and conversations are brilliantly on point. The banter and bickering between Crackers and Butter is funny, warm-hearted and shows that the two really are the best of friends. When Peanut first arrives, he is not welcomed at all. His behaviour does little to endear him to his potential housemates; he wets the floor, eats Cracker’s food, ruins nap time, destroys play toys and keeps the pair up at night. But when he goes missing, the duo decide that they have a moral duty to rescue their furry friend and truly welcome and accept him into the home which makes for a delightful and happy ending.
The action plays out in large, colourful panels, playful illustrations and simple speech bubble dialogue. The story embraces messages on friendship, accepting others and adapting to change.
