Our Wonderful World is another fabulous title published by Wide Eyed Editions. Readers can take a journey through fifty-seven countries of the world where they can learn all about the history, people, places and delight in the sights, sounds and smells that make countries unique. Author duo Ben Handicott and Kalya Rya are experienced explorers and their love and passion for travelling shines through in this detailed and delightful read.

Presented over fifty double page spreads, this is a fact-filled feast that brings the countries of the world alive. There is so much to look at and learn about and it will surely inspire a desire to see more of your own country and to explore new countries. Whether you want to see ancient ruins, climb tall mountains, swim in glistening lakes, relax on beautiful beaches, see historical sites, eat mouth-watering food, shop at street markets, have time to reflect and contemplate at temples, wander royal palaces or do any of a long list of things, all readers will find somewhere to visit.

Each double spread includes a welcome box with a short introduction to the country, a quick reference box of key facts, portraits and accompanying captions of five famous and significant people, and a timeline that includes moments to remember with key dates and additional information. Each map is stunning. Major cities are clearly labelled as are places of interest that are illustrated and come with accompanying captions. A spotlight zooms in on specific cities and highlights sites of interest.

When you’re done travelling and exploring there is a search-and-find activity at the back of the book that challenges readers to spot all manner of things in the different countries. A detailed glossary and index completes this perfect non-fiction book.

I run out of superlatives to describe this book, it is beautiful, it is stunning, it is a book that every reader should have the opportunity to savour. Sol Linero’s artwork is wonderful and if you’re like me, you’ll be spotting new things every time you pick up the book.

The book is a fabulous way for children to learn about the countries of the world. If this book does not inspire a desire to travel and to see some of the wider world then I don’t know what will. The book is published as a large format coffee-table sized book and is the kind of book that will be pored over for hours and hours. Sure to be a hit with aspiring globetrotters, young explorers and those that prefer observing the world from the comfort of their own home.

Recommended for 7+.

With thanks to Netgalley, Wide Eyed Editions and Quarto Knows for the advanced reader copy.
