Making a bird is a very delicate process. You will need bones that are impossibly small and that feel almost weightless. These are the bones that will form the shape of your bird. Once you have shaped your bird then it is time to add feathers. Before finally bringing your creation to life with a powerful heart for those endless miles of flight, sharp eyes and a strong beak and claws. And then it it is time for your creation to fly free…
This is such a beautiful picture book that talks to the soul. As I read the book I was filled with a sense of calm and quiet contemplation - it is a book that has a mediative quality to it. The story follows a young girl as she imagines making a bird. The idea forms and then the girl heads out to find the things that she will need. We follow the building process as the shape of a bird begins to form before the girl adds life to her creation. Then once it is complete she is able to release her bird and let it fly freely into the wild.
Some books need to be shared with children and this is definitely one of those books. It is a book that will live long in the memory. A truly stunning picture book with a poetic narrative and sumptuous illustrations that is an ode to the power of imagination, the joy found in doing and then finally seeing your creation soar.
