Dependable and reliable old Badger was always ready to lend a paw and had always been there whenever the other animals needed him. Over the years, Badger had helped Mole make a paper chain, taught Frog how to ice skate, shown Fox how to knot a tie and shared his special gingerbread recipe with Mrs. Rabbit. But the time has come for Badger to leave his friends behind and to head off down the Long Tunnel…

Endorsed by Child Bereavement UK, Badger’s Parting Gifts is one of the best picture books on the death of a loved one, it is pretty much perfect in every single way from the gentle words to the wondrous illustrations. Susan Varley expertly handles a very sensitive subject, wrapping a comforting paw around the reader in a warm and comforting story.

Death is simply presented as just a part of life. Badger is not scared of his journey into the Long Tunnel, in fact he is almost ready to move on, his body not working as well as it used to. What bothers Badger more is the hurt and sadness that his friends may feel after he is gone.

At first, tears are shed and feelings of loneliness and sadness are felt but as the animals process their grief they remember all of the wonderful times that they had with Badger and how he made their lives better. Memories are a powerful tool, a great healer and allow us to remember those we have loved and lost with a smile. Badger and his wonderful friends are sure to help children grieve and come to terms with the death of a loved one.

Kind, caring and gentle, this is an essential book to have on the bookshelf.
